Project Timeline:  June 2021 – July 2022

Role Main Contractor, PSCS

The scope of the project included:

  1. Little River Bridge: This bridge comprised of two different sections of construction.
    • Section 1: A three-span stone masonry arch bridge supported on stone masonry abutments and piers.
    • Section 2: A reinforced concrete slab extension on the south side with a single span of approximately 7.2m.
    • Works involved:
      • Re-waterproofing of the concrete deck slab.
      • In-stream works including scour remedial works to damaged sections of the stone masonry invert channel (North and South spans).
      • Construction of a new concrete apron slab across the full width of the stream at the downstream end.
  2. Foxford Bridge: A redundant dry arch on the approach to the main River Moy bridge.
    • Filling the advanced arch with concrete, restoring it back to its original feature.
  3. Ballina Lower Bridge: Masonry arch structure with four equal spans of 10.7m over the River Moy.
    • Infilling scour holes using grout-filled concrete bags placed manually by divers at low tide.
    • Grout tubes were used to fill each bag, preventing grout escape into the river.
    • Rock-filled nylon bags installed from road level via crane.
    • Removal of soft materials from scour depressions using vacuum suction pumps operated by divers.
  4. Knockadangan Bridge: Three-span composite precast concrete beam / reinforced concrete deck slab structure.
    • Replacement of existing sub-standard parapets with new metal parapets.
    • Removal of carriageway surfacing for installation of a spray-applied waterproofing membrane and new deck movement joints.
    • All works conducted from carriageway level with temporary construction access platforms.
  5. Bellacorrick Musical Bridge: 4-span masonry arch structure over the Oweniny River.
    • Repairs to localised undermining of the West bridge piers and riverbed scour depressions.
    • Installation of drainage channels at road level.
    • Work undertaken by Contracts Supervisor Anthony Byrne and stonemason Michael Farrell (trained by Traditional Lime Co. LTD.).
  6. Post Office Bridge: A structure with two sections—a single span masonry arch (downstream) and a reinforced concrete slab extension (upstream), each spanning 2.15m, totaling 11.23m.
    • Creation of new embankments.
    • Construction of four reinforced concrete wing walls.
    • Provision of vehicle safety barriers.
  7. Newport Bridge: Three-span masonry arch structure over the Newport River (Black Oak River).
    • Minor repairs to damaged stone masonry invert in the center span.
    • Repairs to cracked masonry on abutments and piers.
    • Repointing areas with mortar loss on abutments and piers.
