Coonagh to Knockalisheen Distributor Road Advanced Works (Aug 2017 – Jan 2020)

Project Description

The project on the R445 at the Coonagh Roundabout was carried out at the entrance to the Coonagh Industrial Park,Tesco stores, and its car park. The carriageway works were done on a national road in the busy urban environment of Limerick City with an Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) exceeding 9,000. A dynamic Pedestrian and Traffic Management was designed, implemented and monitored by P&D Lydon. The project included the construction of approximately 300m of dual carriageway with footways, cycleways and verges and embankment construction works for a further 650m of future dual carriageway.

The scope of the project included:

  • Approximately 300m of dual carriageway with 2 x 3.65m carriageway, 1 x 2.5m hard shoulder, footways, cycleways, verges, and embankment construction works for a further 650m of future dual carriageway.
  • Site clearance of 33 hectares including hedges, ditches, and stone walls.
  • 11km of site fencing including timber post & rail, timber post & wire, and palisade.
  • Installation of in-situ concrete retaining wall: 250m long x 3.5m high x 0.35m width.
  • Carriageway surface water drainage including breaking out hard rock in trenches.
  • Excavation of embankments on soft ground, excavation of peat and removal off site (130,000m³).
  • Import of 500,000m³ of fill material (6F2 capping and 6A material) to form new embankments.
  • Road pavements, kerbing, and footway/cycleway construction.
  • Road lighting, public lighting, traffic signals, and CCTV installation including the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of all electrical works.
  • Diversion of electrical cables.
  • Provision of pedestrian/cyclist crossings.
  • ESB ducting and telecoms ducting.
  • Approximately 2.1km of watermain ranging in size from 160OD to 600OD, using materials including PE and ductile iron. Liaison with Irish Water and affected parties.
  • Incorporation of Project Supervisor Construction Stage (PSCS) duties performed on site.
