ESB Ducting Smithstown Industrial Estate, Shannon

Project Description

These works involved the excavation & laying of over 1.4km of ESB ducting through the busy live industrial & residential areas of Smithstown, Shannon. P&D employed their traffic management strategy to ensure that all vehicles and pedestrians had access to the area all the time.

Project Timeline – October 2019 – November 2019

Role – Main Contractor including PCSC

The scope of the project included:

  • Installation of 1450m of single 38KV ESB ducting.
  • Bedding & surrounding ducting in thermal sand, installation of ESB marker board, backfilling trench with CMB material, and compacting thoroughly in 300mm layers using a machine-mounted vibrating whacker plate, cutting back joints, and reinstating blacktop as per Purple Book requirements and ROL conditions.
  • Breaking out substantial quantities of hard rock using mechanical rock breakers.
  • Testing & proving ducting and providing ESB Networks with a printout of all duct proving.
  • Installation of 38KV cables through new ducting.
  • Installation of C2 in-situ concrete chambers.
  • Installation of ESB minipillars & vaults.
  • Relaying full bays of new concrete footpaths as part of the Road Opening License conditions.
  • Full-width tarmac reinstatement as part of the Road Opening License conditions.
  • Reinstating road markings.
