Fr. Russell Road Cycle Scheme – (Jan 2024 – June 2024)

Project Description

The Father Russell Road Active Travel Scheme in County Limerick, undertaken by P&D Lydon Ltd, aimed to enhance pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along a 1-kilometer stretch between Racefield Roundabout and the entrance to the Gouldavoher residential area. The project encompassed the construction of segregated cycle tracks on both sides of the road, footpath improvements, pedestrian crossings with raised table junctions, road resurfacing, drainage works, utility provisions, public lighting, traffic signals, bus laybys, tree felling, and landscaping works. The scheme is considered a key element of the Active Travel network on the west side of Limerick city.

The scope of the project included:

  • Online upgrade of an existing section of the L-1429 over a length of 1km.
  • High quality cycling facilities on sections of the L-1429 Father Russell Road.
  • Installation of new traffic signs, traffic signals, and road markings.
  • Reconstruction of the existing footpaths, construction of cycle tracks/lanes, and narrowing of the existing road carriageway.
  • Diversion of live services including ESB, watermains, and telecoms.
  • Connections with the Raheen Roundabout to Quinn’s Cross Active Travel Scheme and the planned St Paul’s to Ballykeefe Active Travel Scheme.
  • Provided significant upgrades to pedestrian and cycling facilities, contributing to the development of a ’15-minute neighbourhood’ in the Raheen/Mungret area.
