Galway County Council Bridge Repair Team Maintenance & Refurbishment Contracts 2023 – Mini – Competition 8 – Derrynavglaun

Project Description

P&D Lydon carried out the repair and replacement of Derrynavglaun bridge for Galway County Council. Works were undertaken in and around watercourses and environmentally sensitive locations. This project included working in conjunction with third party requirements such as Inland Fisheries Ireland and National Parks and Wildlife Services.

The scope of the project included:

  • Demolition of existing damaged concrete and timber parapets, parts of existing damaged wing walls and abutments, existing bridge deck, roadways, retaining walls, and all associated elements.
  • Bridge replacement with new Precast Bridge deck, new rubbing strips and surfacing.
  • Repair of existing mass concrete Abutments, scour hole repair with mass concrete infill.
  • New natural stone parapets.
  • Masonry repair and build of New Gabion wall.
  • Minor stonework repairs and masonry stitch repairs.
  • Cleaning and repair of existing abutments.
  • Cleaning and removing of minor vegetation growth and local spalling concrete.
  • New 250mm thick RC retaining wall and new concrete strip footing doweled to the existing abutments.
  • Traffic Management.
  • The employment of a temporary access road on the south of the existing bridge for vehicle access during the works. This involved temporarily supporting the bailey bridge on concrete block abutments and a gravel access road to the bridge.
  • The employment of necessary River Works.
  • A new timber post and rail fence was built at the approach roads.
