Keel, Achill ESB Ducting

Project Description

This project was part of the ESB National Trenching & Ducting Framework 2015-2021, of which P&D Lydon had successfully qualified for.
The proposed project was located on the northern side of the R319 Mulranny-Keem road. This area is a Special Area of Conservation. A screening assessment was carried out in advance of the works.

Project Timeline – February 2018 – March 2018

Role – Main Contractor including PCSC

The scope of the project included:

  • Carefully removing sod for the proposed trench 1.5m from existing roadside and placing to one side for reinstating.
  • Laying of 2-way ESB ducting for 1.5km.
  • Excavation in the vicinity of live underground & overhead services.
  • Proving of ducts for ESB including pulling brush & mandrel via mechanical winch. This machine gave a printout giving the force required to pull the brush & mandrel.
  • Pulling cables through the ducts for ESB Networks.
  • Excavation of joint pits.
  • Installation of minipillars & vaults.
  • Bridge crossing.
  • Extension of the parapet walls of the bridge.
