Maynooth Train Station Campus – South; Car Park Extension

Project Description

P&D Lydon constructed a new carpark facility between the existing railway line (Maynooth-Dublin line) and adjacent housing estate on the southern side of the existing rail platform.
The works required large precast concrete L Wall units to be installed in close proximity to the existing large block work retaining wall to alleviate the load on the old retaining wall. Having previously installed MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walling we understood the advantages over complexities and construction risks of installing large heavy precast units

Client – Iarnród Eireann/Irish Rail

Location– Maynooth, Co.Kildare

We proposed and designed the use of MSE walls for 2 main reasons:

  • Health and safety – smaller lighter more manageable units built in incremental lifts and with simpler foundation designs alongside a 3m high wall.
  • Cost effectiveness – lower manufacture and transport costs, simpler ground preparation and foundation costs, quicker installation time and costs.
These works were able to be carried out while still maintaining the platform live to all pedestrian and train movements.
The works were carried out within a 4-month window which was 3 months quicker than the time allocated. The works, methods, quality, and efficiency were greatly commended by Irish Rail and the design team.
