N5 Westport-Castlebar 38KV Cable Diversion Carrowbeg

Project Description

This project was part of the new N5 dual carriageway from Castlebar-Westport. Works involved the diversion of the existing 38KVA cables, and MV/LV cables located along the proposed route of the new road. Works involved the excavation & laying of over 1.8km of ESB ducting in and around the grounds of Allergan and the Lodge Rd. in Westport. Substantial ducting took place through areas of very poor ground containing peat.

Role – Main Contractor including PCSC

The scope of the project included:

  • Liaising with Mayo County Council and Wills/BAM, the N5 Castlebar-Westport Road Main Contractor.
  • Installation of 600m of double circuit 38KV ESB ducting.
  • Installation of 1.2km of MV/LV ducting ranging from 8-way ducting down to 2-way ducting.
  • Design & construction of a new jointing chamber for MV/LV ducts (7m long x 3m wide x 2m deep). In-situ concrete covers were formed and placed on top of the chamber for future access if required.
  • Bedding & surrounding ducting in thermal sand, installation of ESB marker board, backfilling trench with CMB material, and compacting thoroughly in 300mm layers using a machine-mounted vibrating whacker plate, cutting back joints, and reinstating blacktop as per Purple Book requirements and ROL conditions.
  • Installation of drainage pipeline to new culvert and installation of Gabion baskets to act as headwalls.
  • Installation of marker posts.
  • Testing & proving ducting and providing ESB Networks with a printout of all duct proving.
  • Installation of 38KV cables through new ducting.
  • Installation of C2 in-situ concrete chambers at ESB minipillars & vaults.
  • Relaying full bays of new concrete footpaths as part of the Road Opening License conditions.
