Project Description

The N60 Balla to Claremorris Road Realignment at Heathlawn in County Mayo, Ireland,is a national secondary road linking Castlebar, County Mayo to Roscommon. This was a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing road safety and improving traffic flow on the N60 Route. This realignment represents a significant improvement in the route’s infrastructure, aiming to provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for road users.

The scope of the project included:

  • 7m carriageway, 0.5m hard strips, 2.5m cycleway, and verges of typically 2.0m to 3.0m.
  • Minimized impact on the Special Area of Conservation (SAC); verge width was locally reduced within the southern verge to 0.5m for approximately 270m in length.
  • 3.6 kilometers of Type 2 Single Carriageway, incorporating both online and offline segments.
  • Active Travel Facility established along the entire length to accommodate non-motorized users.
  • Local road realignments and junction improvements to enhance overall connectivity and safety.
  • Upgrades on the N60, which connects Castlebar to Roscommon town via Claremorris, Ballyhaunis, and Castlerea.
  • Crucial link between County Mayo and the Irish motorway network at Tuam — sections experiencing daily traffic volumes exceeding 7,000 vehicles.
  • Prior to this project, the N60 had undergone minor realignment works since the 1970s, including the Claremorris relief road constructed between 1988 and 2000.
