Athlone Waterproofing

  • Client: Iarnród Eireann/Irish Rail
  • Location: Athlone to Westport Rail Line

About this Project

The works involved the closing of the track line between Athlone and Westport over a bank holiday weekend.

The existing track had to be lifted out to allow the ballast to be sucked out by a specialist suction tanker and the existing steel bridge deck exposed and cleaned for waterproofing.

These works were carried out within a 5-hour window and thus allowed time for water proofing to be carried out. As once the waterproofing was completed and allowed cure the reinstatement works commenced and the track replaced, and the line re-opened for the following morning for the busy commuter train movements. Over-all the works were carried out within a 12-hour rail closure.
